My Exam was based on Identity and dyslexia because i wanted it to be a reflection of a personal aspect of mine relating back to the brief of exploration and discovery making each piece more personal to me. i chose to make a zine and a poster for my final outcome and i think they worked really well. i did allot of research into what a zine is because i was unsure at first what they actually was. the whole aspect of a zine is to be able to pick it up flick through it and throw it away. i think my final outcome follows this guideline perfectly because you could pick it up flick through and chuck it away and still have learnt something about dyslexia in the short time spent browsing it. i chose to have no grammar featured during my piece because dyslexic people struggle with that area and aspect of the english language, i thought about if it would work over and over again and decided to follow it knowing that it would. this is a new working style for me because normally i work on the basis of if i like it its good but with this i took more time to experiment asking others what they thought of my work and if they thought it worked well, the Artist i chose took me a lot of time to pick because i wanted to find artist’s who use typography but in a more personal sense rather then just selecting a default text and doing the whole piece in that style.when making my zine i also took into consideration the composition of the piece as a whole so the pages flowed into each other perfectly so i went with the basis of a front page information some more information then some illustrations and the crucial back page i chose to make the same as the front page so you could pick it up from any side and it would still make sense and follow the rules of a zine and also relates back to dyslexia. the pictures i took during this project are all very strong and are of high quality this was key for my project to work because without them my work would be lacking the essential detail needed. my project as a whole i felt conveyed the message i wanted to perfectly and if i did it again i would not change what i did but possibly i would add more pages to the zine making it longer by adding more illustrations.

This is my prep for the 4th page of my zine i started of with a plain background i thought keeping it simple would be a good way of contrasting the text with or without colour, the text i will in the exam replace with my own version inspired by Martin O’Neill, this will give the pieces depth and more of a personal touch again linking back with my theme of dyslexia, if i did the prep again i would experiment more with a different typeface and possibly change the colours about a bit to see if the contrast of the text with the background text and colour would make any difference to the piece as a whole

This is my experimentation and page plan for my 7th page featured in my zine the first 2 text’s was wrote in white because as black text they did not contrast well with the image rendering it ineligable the white also adds a nice depth to the image as a whole giving a simple but effective focal point , If i did the eperiments again i would have experimented with more typeface and colour to see if the message the image is delivering was still clear even when its changed slightly

these were experiments to see what i wanted to include on page 6 of my zine, in the end i chose not to include any of these as i felt like they confused the message i wanted to send, the text was made red because i wanted it to become the focal point of the image and i also felt like it contrasted well with the rest of the image seeing as that was just black and white, the illustrated hand was to add depth to the image giving it a all round layered effect for my page 6 i will produce a word-search instead because i want a sense of interaction in my work this will make it more personal as a whole and also link in with my theme of dyslexia because it’s a very personal subject

This is my personal response to Alan Kitching’s typography piece the black contrasts well with the white splats adding depth to the piece, if i did the piece again i would have made the background more black and possibly experimented more with the way the text looked

This is my poster i did during my exam it follows conversations i recorded myself, it show’s how people from different backgrounds speak using the everyday language of english, this piece shows that everyone has there own version of the english language, and the people they talk to can clearly understand them even though most people would think that they are not speaking english, the words placed in a hand makes it more unique and contrast’s with the conversation because everyones hands are different and so are peoples grasp of the english language, using no colour adds depth to the piece and makes you question what the focal point of the piece is,

if i did this again i would of added colour to see what it would have looked like and possibly added something to the background to give it more of a texture./layer feel

These are my photos i took to show what i want to illustrate when it comes to my scrabble piece page i chose to take these high quality images of what i want my finale page to look like, i want to illustrate a questionmark spelling out dyslexia with the numbers back to front and on the wrong side and some of the letters back to front aswell keeping with the theme of dyslexia. i also experimented with how it would look if i changed the layout of the scrabblepieces but i did not like the way it came out and chose to go for the sidewards faced question mark. i like the idea of it questioning your mind and also it makes you question as you look threw the zine

this is some experimentation i did to try and find the perfect front cover for my zine i chose to go with the idea of the hand being the centre part of the page but on its side and i was going to do this by adding acrylic paint to my hand and printing it on paper to give a smooth black texture i decided to not go with there being text flowing threw the background although this does add depth to the piece i felt like i would draw the attention away from the centre and my message would not be clear however i liked the idea of the flowing text so i wish to incorperate it into another piece of my zine. i also chose to do one of the pieces with basic french communication because i visited paris and there was a language barrier and although most could speak english it was still quite little and useually only things like hello and goodbye. i did not feel like that worked so well though so i chose not to follow the idea up

This my personal response to Martin O’Neill’s typography caravan piece i think it worked really well as the typeface is clear to understand and could contrast well with anytype of background, colour or image i would like to use this typeface throughout my exam to make it more personal as my subject is dyslexia

Martin O’Neill has been working in the graphics industry as a sucessfull illustrator for 13 years , his work is often hand made and normally revolvs around it being a collage he works for a wide range of international clients aswell as regularly contributing to the UK and US press.

Almost all of O’Neill’s work is hand made and works on the process of layering lots of different images ontop of each other giving the piece mutch needed depth there is also normally a main focal point at the centre of the piece often made clear by its composition in the image, sometimes the work he creates makes you think to yourself what is the main point of this piece making your further question what you think about the piece. often his pieces use a wide range of colours aswell this contrasts well with the background of the image what throughout his work seems to always be in the same style its almost like a crumpled paper look or lots of teard colourd paper layerd ontop of each other . i also like how on one of his pieces he has used his own hand writing he must of thought about this alot when making the image because the text you use on a piece must be legiable and often some people cannot interpret what people say when they hand write things.

the time period his work belongs to is very relevant to this day and age in the Graphic industry as its a ever changing world his work is always changing with new styles and new ways to create collages that travel all around the world. it belongs to the younger culture judging by most of his work even though some of the images used appear to be from the 1950’s i think this is to appeal to the older generationg of viewers.

I wish to make my own alphabet text and use this in my zine i feel like its a edgy move to make on my part as im not very confident when it comes to my hand writing and this will be a good way to tell if it would actually work well im going to base it on his caravan type piece as this is where his hand writing is demonstrated i also fell like this makes my own work more personal rather then using a generic typeface

Alan Kitching is world renowned as the worlds foremost practionier in letterpress typographic design and printmaking he is also well known for his excessive use of wood and metal letterforms when creating pieces of art he is commisioned for he also makes his own limited edition prints.

Alan kitching use’s screen printing quite exessively when creating typography based installments he tends to use a wide range of colours branching from cool reds to dark blues often contrasting colours that normally dont work well with each other but does it in a way that gives the piece depth and alow’s it to all flow together.

the composition of his work is often either really close together giving it a squashed look but also a sence of layer and depth because often the type overlaps eachother it works really well because you have to look more then once to understand what its saying alowing the piece of art to pop out towards you making you look numerous times to see what its trying to say. But somtimes his work can be very spaced out and in black and white often black and white are seen to be dol boring colours so you would assume the piece to be boring untill you look at it again and realise it’s actually been thought out to make you think that its boring untill you take a closer look.

Alan Kitchings work belongs to the typographic movement industrialising what everyday typography looks like and breaking its boundries to constantly think of new ways to present text, his work is from the 1990,2011 time period and his work inspires allot of people his art often has alot of layers built up useing different colours and textures giving each piece its own sence of depth and approval.

Alan Kitching’s work inspires me to create my own style of type to use in my project i want to experiment useing masking tape and spray paint to create my own text’s aswell the aim of the spray paint will be to give it the layer effect demonstrated in all of kitchings work i also want it to contrast the type with the spraypaint

1)How big is space? The solar system is around 9,000,500 miles from the sun to the earth

3)statistics? The milkyway galaxy has a diameter of 100,000 light years and a thickness of 1,000 light years the number of stars found so far is 100-400 billion and the oldest known star is 13.2billion years old

4)What does space look like? It looks like millions of white dots in the sky each representing a star and if you look through powerful enough telescopes you can see planets

A red dwarf is a small and relatively cool star it’s got a 0.075 solar mass and its less then 4000k in temperature there are many other types of recorded stars e.g a brown dwarf, white dwarf, black dwarf, blue dwarf fuzzball, protostar, pulsar, gravastar, hypornova, iron star, blue giant, bright giant, fusor, exotic star, yellow hyper giant

BrainAndBody

1)What does the brain look like? It looks like lots of big worms entangled into each other to create a sphere like object

2)What does each side of the brain control? The left brain functions are things like, logic, detail oriented, facts, words and language, present and past, math’s and science, knowing, acknowledgement, order/pattern perception, knows objects names, reality based, forms strategies, practical, safe. The right brain function controls things like feelings, big picture orientation, imagination rules, symbols and images, present and future, philosophy and religion, meaning, believes, appreciates, spatial perception, knows object function, fantasy based, presents possibilities, impetuous, risk taking

3) Can you have superpowers? Technology could theoretically be used to alter your mental capacities, increasing your intelligence, and perhaps giving you telepathic, precognitive, or telekinetic abilities

. You could also biomechanically enhance your body to make you have super strength or have a robotic heart that pumps blood around your body allowing you to run faster and go for longer

2)Does everyone dream? Everyone dreams while they are sleeping but not everybody remembers it

3) Is it a state of mind or a life goal/dream? It’s a state of mind you go into when your asleep its said that it is your subconscious being suggestive to you

i chose to make the backpage the same as the front because then it dosent matter what way the zine is picked up you could still flick through it and see what the zine is about as the last page before the backpage clearly says dyslexia and the second page is information about it so it really dosent matter what way the zine is picked up but also i chose to do this because i wanted to keep the theme of dyslexia and how letters and numbers are back to front to people who suffer from it

this is my illustrated lips with the word dyslexia coming out of it several times but in different ways i chose lips because its where we speak from and we dont really put any thought into talking or speaking but its also where our voice comes from . i chose to make the words jumbled because it keeps up the reocurring theme of dyslexia with the letters upside down and back to front . the piece as a whole contrasts well with the text and the image to keep it simple but very effective because you do have to look more then once to realise what it’s saying

this is my dyslexia wordsearch i also included the prep i did in the exam then the finished photoshopped version. The words i chose to include are all subjects a dyslexic person may find diffuculty with or may exel in e.g a art subject. This gives my zine a sence of interaction as if they wanted to they could actually fill it out as the words are all included i fell like this also adds more of a personal touch to my zine

This is my scrabble dyslexia piece keeping up with the letters and numbers theme involved in dyslexia i chose scrabble because its iconic when it comes to words . i chose to illustrate a question mark using scrabble pieces to keep your mind questioning i included the pieces actual number values on them but i put them all back to front and on the other side of the piece. Similiar to how a dyslexic person would i have also put some of the letters back to front. the bottem part of the question mark i chose to include grammer instead of letters because i wanted to add some grammer into the piece i feel it merged the two of the together really well

this is the written prep i used and my finished page the image itself. it’s a clever pun because when you look at it you can either see AM I OR I AM so it makes you look more then once drawing you eyes to the centre of the image i chose to use the alphabet and the word dyslexia as the background to the image because i felt like they bother contrasted eachother together and added depth to the image. you will also notice that during the alphabet and the dyslexia i added a sequence where some of the letters are in the wrong place or back to front another common occurrence keeping up the theme of dyslexia

this is my second and last information page in my zine as i found out in my research that a zine has more illustrations rather then information because they illustrate the point rather then lots of text what most people find either boring or they dont read between the lines and often your message is not deliverd. i chose to take actuall examples of childrens work who suffer from severe dyslexia for people to see what a dyslexic person would write and how they interpret things we find simple but to them its very difficult
